Follow the below procedure to make a web application compatible to Eclipse so that the project can be debug and run from local eclipse.
Import the existing project, File -> import -> General -> Existing Projects into workspace
Right click on the project and select Properties
· Click on “Project Facets” option and check in “Dynamic web module” property and select a version of it. Once it is selected, at the bottom of the window you will see a link “Further Information”. If you click on this, it will show the default web directory. Click on ok.
And again right click on the project and select Properties

Check the Context path of the application how the application path should be in the URL
· Click on the “Deployment Assembly” option and check how the files are copied to server. Check the deployment paths of each folder and files whether they are copied correctly to the server. And also make sure whether it contains the libraries to be copied to the server. It will copy the dependent library files to WEB-INF/lib path.
· Go to “Build Path” option and Check the Library tab whether it contains all required libraries.
· To set environment variables like Config mode or logs path, go to Run -> Run Configuration -> Apache Tomcat -> Tomcat v5.5 server at localhost -> Arguments
o In the VM arguments field, append the variables
o For ex: -D<variable name>=<value>
-DLOGDIR:-logs=logs
